What is St. Michael Academy's Virtual Night Downtown?

STAY HOME. STAY SAFE. SHOP LOCAL (NOW).

St. Michael's Virtual Night Downtown is a one-stop shopping event is designed to inspire us to think ahead, shop now, and promote in-store visits, when Michigan’s “Stay Safe” restrictions melt away!

NOTE: By request, SMA's Virtual NIGHT Downtown will remain "open" day and night, until it no longer benefits our Up North businesses.

Virtual Night Downtown (VND) is a website featuring participating merchants and providing an opportunity to highlight their newest, most popular, and amazingly creative wares and promotions - more on this later.

Customers (visitors to the site) enjoy exploring merchants' fantastic offerings, outstanding ideas, and delicious enticements, and to purchase them as gifts to treat themselves, as well as others.

ONE-STOP SHOPPING

Each tempting offering you choose (across all participating vendors) is added to a single shopping cart, and VIOLA -  shopping across many Up North stores with one check out!

WHAT AM I ACTUALLY BUYING?

INTANGIBLY:

The opportunity to bring joy to friends, family, and even yourself - as well as local businesses
MATERIALLY:
Downloadable Gift Certificates in the amounts of your purchases!

Tax is included in the amount of each gift certificate - if it applies-so you won't have to pay anything more when picking up the item(s), curbside, or later when stores open.

Standard gift cards may also be purchased and downloaded. (Standard cards are not taxable.)

THEN WHAT?

You may redeem your purchased certificates according to guidelines as defined by the merchant.

FOR EXAMPLE:

If a merchant is offering local delivery or curbside pick-up...

You may contact them to arrange for local delivery or for a curbside pick-up time of your particular item(s). The merchant will have a record of your purchases from their store for verification.

If a business is currently shut-down...

You may redeem your certificate when the merchant opens for walk-in traffic.

WHAT ABOUT SHIPPING?

If shipping is requested, additional fees may apply and be charged separately by the vendor when the certificate is redeemed.

HISTORY

SHOP LOCAL FIRST - SO LOCAL LASTS?

The letter below was shared with Up North business in the

Fall of 2016, and tells the story of SMA's Shop Local Program.

___________________________________________

Life changes quickly. In the blink of an eye, we go from pushing strollers downtown to driving a “taxi” in pursuit of our family’s athletic, educational, musical, civic, spiritual, and recreational interests.

What doesn’t seem to change? The parade of donation requests from the organizations offering these fantastic opportunities so they may continue to enhance our community and help make it the exceptional place we are blessed to call “home.”

Who else makes our community great? You, our local businesses. And we need to support you, too. With almost half of St. Michael Academy (SMA) families being self-employed, we understand and strive to uphold The Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
One way is by pledging to approach community partners with creative, mutually beneficial ideas to consider when requesting their support. Opening a small Catholic high school in northern Michigan would not have been possible otherwise. We are pleased to share that, even in our short existence, at least three families credit St. Michael Academy as an important deciding factor in moving to this area.

Borrowing from Brett Moore, an SMA founding student and recent graduate, “It’s our choices that ultimately define us.” A true statement, whether referring to self or community and a reason why SMA created Shop Local First So Local Lasts©—a public service campaign to remind us all to, simply, check out our local businesses before shopping on-line.

This choice, made even once a year in each household, could result in thousands of local transactions and be a defining factor in our community's future.

We hope our purple and gold Shop Local First© signs when placed in storefronts and at checkouts, inspire locals and visitors alike all to consider value over price and fellowship over perceived convenience.

Thank you in advance for your consideration to display our Shop Local First So Local Lasts© card. When we help each other, we all succeed.

...And when we’re chatting with that local sales clerk, life just might slow down, even for a minute.

Kind Regards,
Marie Law
